We talked about the relationships these characters had with the main characters, and how the author tied the characterization into the theme of loneliness. We began reading chapter 3, but did not get the opportunity to finish it. We will tomorrow. There are topics of sensitive nature in the novella. We will continue to analyze word choice of the author, and its effect on the reader. I hope the students enjoy the long weekend!!!!
2 September 2021- We discussed the differences between phrases and clauses. Students took notes about each, and then we worked on an assignment to reinforce the concepts. That didn't go very well. Students should be prepared for a quiz.

15 October 2020- Students were engaged in a padlet discussion and then broke out into separate 'chat rooms' to discuss the plot of the novel. Students were to analyze the events that led up to the climax of chapter 5. Students made predictions of what was going to happen based on the foreshadowing of the author's text. Tomorrow, students will break out into small groups and conduct a seminar regarding the theme of the novel. Students are to read the last chapter for tonight.
14 October 2020-- Students need to check their emails for attendance form.
13 October 2020- Students were engaged with Padlet, again. From the conversation with the students, they like the idea of this platform. We defined power dynamics, and discussed how it affects literature/culture. Students were given an assignment in google classroom and are expected to complete it by tomorrow afternoon. Students should read chapter 5 tonight. Tomorrow is our second "Pride Time" Wednesday. Students will need to 'check in' with me via a google document.
12 October 2020-- We tried a new platform today: Padlet. I think the students enjoyed it; at least, that is what they told me. : - ) Students read an article from Aristotle and responded to several questions using the padlet site. We made connections to the novel with the information from the article. Students were asked to complete a text to film comparison for homework as well as read chapter 4 if they hadn't already.
9 October 2020- Students were asked to complete a short answer quiz today. I have uploaded the final chapters for Of Mice and Men in the google classroom. Students should read chapter 4 over the weekend. Students were also asked to complete a Friday Reflection Journal question that is due on Monday.
8 October 2020- Students were engaged in comparing the text of Of Mice and Men to some video clips. We discussed the concepts of relationships in the novel and the American Dream theme. We then moved onto a worksheet that reviewed the literary concept of irony, sarcasm, satire, and understatements. Students were asked to complete a worksheet reviewing the three types of irony. UPDATE: Students were asked to read chapter 3 for homework.
7 October 2020- Pride Time Wednesday!
6 October 2020- Students reviewed the opening paragraphs of the novel and discussed the author's purpose of word choice. We also analyzed the two main characters: Lennie and George. Students are to read chapters 1 and 2 of the novel. The PDF is located in the google classroom under the topic heading- Of Mice and Men.
5 October 2020- Students viewed a Powerpoint presentation about John Steinbeck. We discussed the era in which he composed the novel, 'Of Mice and Men'. We analyzed the language Steinbeck used to establish the setting and introduce the characters. I have posted an assignment in the google classroom; it is due on Wednesday. Speaking of Wednesday!!! I will be holding a "Pride Time/Asynchronous" period during the hours of 9-11. I will send invites to the student who are in danger of or failing English. Parents/Guardians: Please check PowerSchool for your student's grade.
2 October 2020-- Students read a short story from the Common Lit website: Desiree's Baby. This assignment was designed to prepare for the novel, 'Of Mice and Men'. On Monday, I will begin the author's background information and discuss word choice as it pertains to setting and author's purpose.
1 October 2020- Students were engaged in a parallel structure quiz today. We accessed the Quill.org site to complete this task. The students had all day to complete 4 assignments. I will take the two best scores from those assignments and average those scores. Just received notice that PowerSchool will be off-line this evening, so I will have to update scores tomorrow.
30 September 2020-- Grammar, grammar, and more grammar! Today, we discussed the concept of parallel structure. Students viewed a PowerPoint presentation from the website: Grammar Bytes! Love the pun. Students were asked to respond to over 20 sentences with the correct parallel structure. They did well! Tomorrow, I have scheduled a quiz on parallel structure. Students will have all day to complete 4 assignments from the Quill website. I will take the two best scores and average the results for one quiz grade.
29 September 2020-- Today in class, we reviewed misplaced and dangling modifiers. I gave the students a brief homework assignment to complete. It shouldn't take them more than 15- 20 minutes to finish. Beginning next week, we will be implementing an "Asynchronous Wednesday" for the students to give them an opportunity to "catch up" on work or recieve enrichment of lessons. The first week of "Asynchronous Wednesday," I will meet with ALL students who have a 75% or lower in English class. I will help those students get 'caught up' with assignments so that they are passing the class or have improved their average. The students who are performing well will have an enrichment assignment to complete. I will notify the students who MUST attend the meeting via email. I hope to get all students will use this time to improve their average or learn a little more about the subject we are studying. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Thank you.
24 September 2020- Today, I highlighted some of the students' work. I am impressed with their slideshows. Most everyone handed in the assignment on time. Students who have not completed their assignment should do so as soon as possible. We also discussed pathetic fallacy and its use in literature. There is no homework for tonight. Students should work on completing any assignments they are missing!!
23 September 2020- Today in class, I reviewed the MLA citations and the slideshow presentation that is due by the end of the day today. I also began discussing the literary device of pathetic fallacy. There is no homework for tonight. Students should finish their slideshows.
22 September 2020- I was not feeling well today, and I did not hold class. I uploaded several tasks for the students to complete and took attendance via the submitted assignments. I did email all parents and students to alert them of my absence.
21 September 2020- Students completed a final essay exam for 'The Great Gatsby'. I did not have an official google meet, but I was present to answer any questions the students had.
16, 17, 18 September 2020-- Parents and students: I apologize. Normally, this page is updated ALL THE TIME. Needless to say, I have been negligent in completing my promises. This was a busy week with the assigning of a Summative Project that is due on Wednesday, September 23rd. This project was explained at length during September 15th's class. The finished product will be uploaded to the student's portfolio as well as being submitted through google classroom. On Thursday and Friday, I spent the time reviewing and modeling the correct MLA format for the student's slideshow presentation. The student's have a final essay exam on Monday, September 21st. I will not be holding an official google meet, but I will be present for students to 'drop in' and ask questions regarding the essay.
15 September 2020- Students worked on a Common Lit reading assignment today. I have pushed back the final assessment for The Great Gatsby. We will have a final essay assignment on Monday Sept 21. I am introducing a final summative assignment for the students tomorrow. This assignment will be a larger scale project with a lot of parts to it. I will walk students through it and supply an example. Students should read chapter 9 for homework tonight.
14 September 2020- Students worked on subordinating conjunctions today. We completed an assignment on Quill. I did not get as far as I wanted to with the period 1 class, but the other classes should have completed a follow up activity as well as a handout on fragment sentences. Students should be reading chapter 8 for homework tonight. We will finish with the novel by Wednesday. Students should prepare for a final essay on Wednesday.
11 September 2020- Students will need to submit their 'Friday Reflection' journal by the end of the day today. Students will also need to turn in their KWL character chart assignment, today! Students took a chapter 5-7 quiz, and I will have that graded and updated by Monday. There is no reading homework this weekend. Enjoy.
10 September 2020- Today, we worked on grammar. We reviewed the sentence structure using compound subjects, predicates, and objects. The students have two grammar assignments to complete in Quill and should be reading chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby. Tomorrow we will have a quiz!!
9 September 2020- Today in class, we tackled symbolism within the novel. I shared a powerpoint presentation about symbolism and a short video to help the students with the assignment of identifying and analyzing symbols in the novel; this assignment is due on September 15th, the schedule day that we should finish the book. Students will need to continue working on the 'Theme Tracker', as that is also due on the 15th. Parents: please check your student's grade in PowerSchool. I have updated a lot of assignments. Students who need to improve their average have the opportunity to so by re-submitting the Common Lit assignment from last week. Only students who scored below a 70% can re-submit that assignment. Any questions, please do not hesitate to email me.
8 September 2020- Welcome back! I trust that you all had a wonderful weekend! How could you NOT! The weather was amazing! Today, students worked on a Quill lesson and have several Quill assignments to complete. This assignment is based off of the data compiled from the diagnostic assessment. It might seem simplistic for some, but 98% of the class struggled with the concept of compound subjects and predicates. So... Students should continue reading the novel, 'The Great Gatsby'; we are reading chapter 5 tonight. Could there be a quiz? I am not sure just yet. Students should be prepared for one.
4 September 2020--Happy FRIDAY of a THREE DAY WEEKEND!!! I know the students are excited. I have to admit that I am, too. Students must submit their Friday Reflection Journal before midnight tonight, as well as the CommonLit reading assignment. Students took a two chapter quiz today; and now, I will average the grades from the first two quizzes with today's. I will be updating grades all weekend, so be sure to ask your student how they are doing; or simply log into your PowerSchool account and check. There is no reading homework this weekend; however, students should be working on the ongoing assignments: KWL character chart and the Theme tracker. Have a great weekend!!
3 September 2020- Hello everyone! Happiness abounded for the students when I announced that they did NOT have to take a chapter 3 quiz; however, I burst their bubble when I told them that they will have to take a two-chapter quiz tomorrow. Today, we discussed the concept of theme. Students watched a 5-minute video addressing what is theme, and I assigned an ongoing task of finding the themes in the chapters we have read and the chapters we will read. For students who were struggling, I modeled what it looks like to find example in the text we are reading. Students should read chapter 4 tonight and prepare for the quiz on Chapters 3 and 4 tomorrow.
2 September 2020-- Thank you to all the parents who logged in to the meeting last night. It was a great success. Today the students analyzed three different artworks, and we discussed how the artist's represented the time period through his art. Student had a graphic organizer to complete and submit by days end. Students also took a chapter 2 reading quiz. They did much better this time. I will be averaging those grades with the ones from yesterday, AND the one for tomorrow. Students should be reading chapter 3. They should expect a reading quiz.
1 September 2020- Meet the Teacher is tonight! I emailed all the parents that I have addresses for. If you are reading this and did not receive an email, you can contact me at [email protected]. I will send you the invitation prior to tonight's meeting. Students took a chapter 1 quiz on The Great Gatsby today. Students were asked to complete a KWL character chart for the characters they meet in the novel. They should add to the chart any information pertaining to the characters and add new characters as they are introduced. Students should read chapter 2 for tonight's homework. It is a strong possibility that I will give another chapter quiz tomorrow.
31 August 2020-- Happy Monday! We started the novel unit with 'The Great Gatsby'; although it is NOT required for students to purchase a copy, you can find it rather inexpensively on Amazon. I have uploaded a pdf file of the novel to the google classroom. Students are to read Chapter 1 for tonight's homework. There could be, might be a chapter quiz tomorrow!!! Thank you to all the students who are participating! And that is about ALL! I really enjoy the interaction, albeit online, I still am having fun! This is today's daily journal question: ~31 August 2020- To what extent is conformity and rebellion necessary in a society? Can you think of any examples when society had to conform or rebel?
28 August 2020-- Today, I assigned a writing assessment. Students were to watch a video, "I forgot my phone," and respond to a New York Times article surrounding the idea that our society has been lost to the age of technology. This is a formal MLA format essay, and I was available during the 'live instruction' time to answer any questions the students had. I will be asking the students to add to their "Friday Reflection" journal over the weekend.
27 August 2020-- Today's class was filled with review and new concepts. Students worked on a graphic organizer for two separate poems: 'The Rose that Grew in the Concrete' by Tupac Shakur and 'Mother to Son' by Langston Hughes. I walked through the graphic organizer with one of the two poems, then the students were expected to use that knowledge to complete the analysis of the second poem. That assignment is due tomorrow: August 28th, prior to the class meeting.
26 August 2020-- I have updated grades AGAIN. I will meet with students who have questions regarding their grades during my office hours tomorrow. Students: If you have questions regarding any assignment, please do NOT hesitate to ask. I hope that I make the directions clear enough for you during instruction or on the class announcement 'feed' in the google classroom. If you need clarification, ASK! Do not wait until the due date for the assignment has passed. Parents, I will be sending out the mid-week email this afternoon. Be on the lookout. Today's journal question: Using the poems from Monday, discuss which poem/poet you preferred and why. Support your opinion with evidence/information from the poem or poet's biography.
25 August 2020- I HAVE UPDATED GRADES!! Students you need to check your grades on a weekly basis. You do not want to fall behind with your assignments. Parents/Guardians: If you have any questions regarding your student's grade, please do not hesitate to contact me via email. Students were involved in a diagnostic assessment for grammar. I will update the grades from that assessment once everyone has completed the assignment. Students have a poetry analysis to complete tonight for homework! Everything they need is posted in the google classroom.
24 August 2020-- I love that attendance is going strong! Keep it up class! Today's homework is a poetry analysis between two great American women poets: anne Bradstreet and Edna St. Vincent Millay. I have posted all the work in the google classroom. Students should be tracking the assignments in the classroom. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I will check my email later this afternoon.
20 & 21 August 2020-- Happy Friday!! I did not post yesterday because in class we were sharing the "All About Me" slideshows, and there wasn't much to report. Parents: I will be sending out mid-week updates instead of Friday updates. I feel that getting the update mid-week allows for parents to help students study for quizzes or tests that are usually on Fridays. I will be updating the grades at the beginning of the next week. Keep your eye on Power School. Unfortunately, Power School will be "down" this weekend for maintenance. Students were given several tasks to complete throughout the week. Students: You should be sure to complete the terms/definitions from the video you were asked to watch on Wednesday. Don't forget to answer the bolded question from August 19th. Students were also asked to complete a 'Friday Reflection' for their online journal. When we meet on Monday we will complete a mini poetry unit; and during the week, we will working on diagnostic assessments. Have a great weekend!!!
19 August 2020- Awesome attendance!! Thanks so much for showing up! You make my teacher heart happy. Today we accessed two platforms that we will use throughout the semester: Common Lit and Quill. We made sure that everyone had the ability to log into the apps. We also started some review for a very quick poetry unit. I have uploaded material and a video that the students should work on and watch after class. The 'handout' will need to be updated with what you know about poetry, as well as the vocabulary words from the video, and will be submitted as a homework assignment at the beginning of next week. In the meantime, students should add information to the page as they view the video and with their prior knowledge. Everything we discussed today are things that all students should know from previous English classes. I have set up my gradebook and will be updating grades by the beginning of next week. As I mentioned in class, I am going to ask a question that will confirm that you have watched the video. I will update this page later with that question...stay tuned... Here's the question: (add the answer to your terms/definition document) What was unique about the presenter of the video? AND Did you notice anything different about some of the words in the presentation? If so, what?
18 August 2020-- Another great morning getting to know you all! I am so encouraged by the attendance. Keep coming back! I will do my absolute best to make not so boring. I loved learning about you all and look forward to working with you. You are all so unique. I appreciate your willingness to participate. I have added an assignment to the google classroom which is due on Monday, August 24th. Be sure to check the classroom stream for all the information. The assignment is a letter to the teacher. It asks you a few questions about the semester and the course. You may submit your finished assignment to the google classroom. Thanks again!
17 August 2020-- WOW! Great attendance today! I am really proud of everyone! Period 1-- I sent you editing ability to the slide I tried to send during class. Please go into the slide and add a text box with your name in it. You can change the background color and the font color but not the font type. Tomorrow in class we will do what I had planned. Sorry for all the issues regarding the orientation video. I hope to have that all worked out by tomorrow's class. Period 3 and 4--So glad we were able to get the google slide updated with everyone's name. We will use that tomorrow in class. Please be mindful of the times that we are meeting! Period 1: VIRTUAL CLASS begins at 7:45-9:00 Period 3: VIRTUAL CLASS begins at 12:00- 12:45 and Period 4: VIRTUAL CLASS begins at 1:30 - 2:18.

I don't know about you, but I am a little excited to see how this beginning is going to "play out." I look forward to getting to know each of you as we all navigate through this weird learning platform, again. Keep coming back to this website for daily updates. You will also see the daily updates in the Google classroom. I will ONLY post the links to the meetings in the Google classroom, so don't look for them here.
SUNDAY UPDATE: Good afternoon. I'm not sure how many of you will check this page, but I wanted to remind you that students will need to access their Wake County portal through the high school page in order to log into the google class tomorrow. BUT FIRST, you will need to open your school email, again ONLY using the county portal to find the link that I will email to all students prior to the start of each class. Period 1-- BY THE WAY-- begins at 7:45!!! I will email the link by 7am and be in the "class" by 7:25. I will use this time to help the students in period 1. Period 3 students will receive an email with the class link by 11am -- class begins at noon-- but I will be available in the "class" by 11:05 to help any student. And finally Period 4 students will receive an email with the class meeting link by 12:50-- class begins at 1:30-- but I will be in the "class" by 12:50 to help any student. SEE YOU TOMORROW!!!
